A crane may spend only a few minutes actually moving a load, but a successful lift starts well before the hook leaves the ground.

Know What You Are Lifting

The first step is identifying the load.

Knowing that something is a generator, HVAC unit, tank, or piece of machinery is not enough. The crane operator needs an accurate weight and information about the load’s dimensions.

Useful information includes:

  • Total load weight
  • Length, width, and height
  • Manufacturer and model
  • Available lifting points
  • Center of gravity
  • Rigging requirements
  • Pickup location
  • Final placement location

Manufacturer specifications, equipment drawings, shipping documents, and identification plates can help confirm this information.

Do not guess the weight of a load when accurate specifications are available.

Understand Crane Reach

One of the most common misunderstandings about crane capacity involves reach.

A crane’s rated tonnage does not mean it can lift that weight at every distance from the machine.

As the distance between the crane and load increases, lifting capacity changes. Boom length, boom angle, configuration, and operating radius all affect the crane’s available capacity.

For example, placing equipment directly beside a crane may require significantly less capacity than placing the same equipment on the opposite side of a building.

A site that is easy to reach with a pickup truck may not provide enough room for a large crane.

Contractors should also consider whether other crews or deliveries will block access on the scheduled lift day.

Evaluate the Setup Area and Ground Conditions

Once the crane reaches the site, it needs a suitable location to set up.

Mobile cranes use outriggers or other support systems to create a stable operating base. The setup area must provide enough space for the crane and its required configuration.

Ground conditions also matter.

Soft soil, recently excavated areas, underground utilities, septic systems, vaults, trenches, and other conditions can affect whether the ground can safely support the equipment.

Sloped or uneven terrain may create additional challenges.

These conditions should be identified before crane setup begins. Finding an unknown underground structure after the crane arrives can delay the job or require the lift plan to change.

Identify Overhead and Surrounding Hazards

Crane operations require enough room for the boom, load, rigging, and supporting equipment to operate safely.

Potential hazards include:

  • Trees
  • Communication lines
  • Light poles
  • Construction equipment
  • Traffic
  • Other cranes
  • Workers in surrounding areas

Power lines require particular attention because contact or close proximity can create serious electrical hazards.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration establishes requirements for cranes and derricks used in construction, including provisions for power line safety, equipment setup, inspections, and qualified personnel.

Identifying hazards before lift day gives the crew more time to determine how they will affect crane placement and operations.

Plan the Rigging

The crane is only one part of the lifting system.

Slings, shackles, spreader bars, lifting beams, and other rigging equipment may be needed to connect and control the load.

Rigging requirements depend on the equipment being lifted, available lifting points, load geometry, weight, and center of gravity.

Some loads are relatively straightforward. Others require careful planning to keep the equipment level and controlled during the lift.
